IOWA Assessments (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)

The Iowa Assessments are standardized tests provided as a service to schools by the College of Education at the University of Iowa. Iowa Assessments™ Exam was released in the 2011-2012 school year and has replaced the Iowa Test of Basic Skills® (ITBS®) and Iowa Test of Educational Development®.

The Iowa Assessments is a group-administered achievement test for grades K-12 which measures a student’s knowledge in subject areas that students have learned in school – reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

The Iowa Assessments are used by school districts to assess a student’s college and career readiness. They are prevalent as a component of determining whether a student will be admitted into a school’s Gifted Program.

IOWA tests are written in levels 5-14. Each test level consists of a series of tests administered in content sections for levels include:

Reading Comprehension
Vocabulary
Listening,
Language,
Mathematics
and Sources of Information.

Format of the test:

The Iowa Assessment is a rigorous test that assesses knowledge of your child in subjects of reading, language, social studies, and science. The format is mostly like any other standardized test. However, it is timed and a long test based on the grade level of the child.

Since it is an achievement test that measures the aptitude of your child towards subject learning, it also tests your child on new information or content which might not have studied before. The test is more about the application of concepts your child already knows but in a more rigorous manner.

The levels of the test go from 5 through 18 and are associated with the grade levels.
