“Why Us” essay isn’t really about the college it’s about the student.
If your teen is applying to college this year, you’ve probably heard the phrase “Why Us essay” tossed around more times than you can count. It’s one of the most common and surprisingly tricky parts of the college application process.
Colleges love this question because it tells them something deeper than grades or test scores ever could. They want to know if your teen has done their homework, if they truly understand what makes that school unique, and if they’ll fit into the community they’re so carefully building.
Reading between the Lines
When a prompt says, “Why do you want to attend our university?”, what they’re really asking is:
- Do you know what makes us special?
- Can you connect that to your goals, values, and learning style?
- Have you pictured yourself here really pictured it?
A strong essay doesn’t just list campus features like a beautiful library or a famous professor. Instead, it shows how those features connect to a student’s journey and future plans.
For example, a student interested in environmental science might write:
“I’m drawn to the university’s Sustainability Living Lab because it would let me combine research with hands-on community work exactly the kind of real-world impact I hope to make.”
That sentence does two important things: it shows that the student has researched the school, and it connects that detail to a personal motivation. That’s what makes admissions officers take notice.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Being too generic. “I love your beautiful campus and great academics” could apply to almost any school.
- Copying from the website. Admissions officers know their own marketing material they’re not looking for a summary.
- Forgetting personal connection. The best essays sound like a conversation, not a brochure.
